A Rifle Officer’s sabre by Dean 35” overall. 31” sharply carved blade with broad fuller engraved with post 1800 royal coat of arms, trophies of arms and to the obverse Crown GR and foliage. Gilt boat shaped hilt with ‘D’ shaped knucklebow, plain back strap with twisted silver wire grip. In its original black leather and gilt mounted scabbard with suspension rings and frog, engraved ‘Dean 9 Strand London’.

Sword in very good condition, gilt highlights in the engraving, scabbard leather supple.

Infantry officer’s sword of the type associated with rifle officers (by Dean) attributed to Captain Richard Berford. (Berford served with the 97th Regiment of Foot in 1801 in Egypt, then the 5th, or Northumberland Regiment of Foot in Portugal and Spain 1808-1809 where his MGS reflected bars for Corunna, Vimiera & Roleia. He then served with the 2nd (The Queen’s Royal) Regiment of Foot 1812-1814 earning additional MGS bars for Vittoria, Nivelle, Nive, Talavara, Pyyrenees & Orthes
