. An 1854 grenadier guards officer's sword. 38” overall, 32 ½” slightly curved fullered blade, with scrolling foliage and crowned ‘V.R’ and ‘Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall’ to the forte. On the obverse scrolling foliage, crowned grenade and family coat of arms and initials ‘F.R.C’ in a tablet and Wilkinson proof mark on the forte, numbered 5515 on the spine, with steel 1854 pattern gothic hilt with Grenadiers badge. Stepped pommel with fish skin grip and copper gilt wire. In its original steel scabbard.

Number 5515 for 1854.

Sword in very good condition, much original polish remains, sharpened for service. Fish skin grip, hilt and scabbard all in very good condition.

Lt. Col. Fitzroy Clayton. First Battalion Grenadier Guards 1853-1871. Served in the Crimea at the Siege of Sevastopol. Later privy councillor to Queen Victoria, chairman of the RNLI 1908-1911. Sold with extensive research, army lists, obituaries etc.
