. A Carbine Bore Officers Pistol by J. Manton of London, 15” overall,9” octagonal sighted browned barrel with Mortimer’s gilt stamp with two gold lines, foliate engraved tang fitted with rear-sight, stepped bevelled lock signed ‘J.Manton’ and fitted with a sliding safety catch, dolphin headed hammer, half-stocked in walnut, chequering at the grip, silver fore-end cap silver escutcheon with ‘Armstrong crest ’ , remnants of an old belt-clip, steel furniture, engraved trigger guard decorated with stands of arms on the bow and pineapple finial, turned ram-rod pipes, retaining original ramrod, Birmingham proofs. Not numbered. Converted to percussion by H. W. Mortimer.

Pistol in good condition. Barrel refinished and proofed at time of convertion.

Pistol circa 1810 converted circa 1830.

 John. Brother of Joseph. Born 1752. Apprenticed to John Dixon, gunsmith, St. Martins Leicester, 1766; to William Edson, gunsmith, Grantham, Lincs.,1768. Served as foreman to J.F. Twig. Gunsmith, 6 Dover St., Piccadilly, 1781-1814; workshop in yard, 1786. Then as John Manton & Son. Gunmaker to East India Co., 1791-1806.
