A Snider MkII** Navy Rifle. Five groove .577" rifled barrel with ladder rear sight struck with Victorian military proof marks. Snider breach conversion with WD inspection stamps and correct cupped hammer. Lock with crowned VR to the tail marked '1860 ENFIELD' with broad arrow mark. Walnut stock with regulation Naval brass furniture and faint Enfield roundel to the right side, marked to the top of the wrist N^Z 88 1131. MkII** Converted from P58 navy rifles, the five groove short snider is considered the most accurate of the models and was copied with iron furniture for issue to the rifle regiments and sergeants of the army. Many of the naval issue rifles like this were re issued in New Zealand for a second term of service after they were replaced in navy service by the Martini Henry in the 1870's. A rare navy issue gun with colonial history as well. Dated 1860 In good condition with good five groove bore, nice wood and much blue to the metal work.
