A rare Silver Mounted Water's Patent Brass Boxlock Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistol 13” overall 7” belled two-stage barrel fitted with a spring bayonet beneath, signed box lock action engraved "Patent/ No47" on the left side of the action indicating this is the 41st gun he produced with his spring bayonet, "Waters ." on the right side, Tower private proofs on the bottom of the barrel, sliding half-cock safety, a sliding trigger guard that releases the bayonet which has a drum shaped attachment mechanism rather than the more simplified spring mechanisms used on later "snap bayonet" guns. The muzzle flares to 1 inch. Walnut grip with silver escutcheon, grotesque mask cap and silver wire inlay. The cap with Birmingham hallmark for 1780.

Hall marked for 1780. This the lowest numbered example to come to light and one of only two with silver wire inlay In very good condition.

 John Waters is listed on page 56 of "English Gunmakers: The Birmingham and Provincial Gun Trade in the 18th and 19th Century" by Bailey and Nie as active 1766-1788 and "Granted British Patent No. 1284 of 9 Mar. 1781 for attaching bayonets to pistols; he is generally credited with the invention of the 'spring bayonet.'
