A Superb Quality Flintlock Holster Pistol 16" overall, 10" 2 stage bronze barrel octagonal at breech end 4" engraved with a scroll & leaf, London proof & maker's mark to l/h side, top engraved 'Barber London' r/h side with Irish census no. ST3399. Turned rings & plain round slightly swamped fore section, bronze lockplate & pan, plate with scrolling leaf engraving & 'Barber' within foliage, walnut full stock with large moulded dopper ends behind lock plate & side plate, fine silver wire scrolling inlay around barrel tang, silver mounts comprising grotesque mask butt cap, escutcheon within a trophy of arms surmounted by a helmet, trophy of arms side plate, trigger guard with acorn finial, ramrod & tail pipes, original ramrod with worm. Silver hall marks on trigger guard for Birmingham 1774, maker's mark I.B stamped on silver parts. Bronze barrelled pistols are rare.
James Barber II apprenticed to father James Barbar 1 in Gunmakers Co in 1747.
Fine condition, old stock repair barely visible.
