A very rare French “Carabine de Versailles” Infantry Rifle, Model Year XII, 41” overall, 26” barrel with 7 groove rifling of 13.mm calibre. Octagonal , with a bead foresight, blade rear sight. Rounded lock plate stamped “M.RE I.LE A VERSAILLES” (Manufacture Imperial à Versailles, or “Imperial Manufactory at Versailles”), with ring neck cock and brass pan. Walnut full stock with cheek peace on left side of butt. Inspectors roundal dating the rifle to September 1811. With brass furniture comprising butt plate ,trigger guard, 2 side nail cups. Ram rod pipes. Heavy steel ram rod. Numerous inspectors marks for Inspector Jacquesson (“J”) and 1st Controller Deschasseux (“DC”) from the Manufactory of Versailles. Next to this stamp is the acceptance of the stock by controller “J.D.” (Jean-Baptiste Deschasseux).

A very rare rifle in very good condition ,only 2,212 Model Year XII Infantry Rifles, manufactured, very few still in original flintlock. One of the very best examples to come on the English market. Sold with a detailed essay on the rifle.
