A rare Marine or Militia Musket 1757 pattern.

Stock Code: 8417

A rare Marine or Militia Musket 1757 pattern. 56” overall, 40” musket bore barrel engraved INDIP.COM. on top of the barrel with King’s proof marks and ‘IW’ barrelsmith’s mark. Walnut stock, carved around the tang, brass butt plate numbered 54, flat Sea Service pattern sideplate, 3 ramrod pipes and no entry pipe or fore-end. Iron ramrod. With a later, but working life, replacement flintlock by Barnett with a swan neck cock. In good condition for age with attractively patinated stock.

I have been unable to find out who the INDIP.COM were, but they were probably a militia as very few of these muskets went to the Marines. The barrel has been shortened by 2” so would no longer take a bayonet.

Barnett was the principle contractor for the Coastguard and Customs services so this may have been refurbished for issue to them.
