A very rare early John Manton Blunderbuss

A very rare early John Manton Blunderbuss 32” overall. 16” iron barrel with swamped muzzle engraved “London” on top flat with Tower Private proofs. Flat stepped bolted lock plate engraved “Manton” in script. Flat swan neck cock, spoon shaped pan. Internally the lock is made to a very high standard. Walnut full stock with handrail shaped butt, brass mounts comprising florally engraved brass butt plate, sporting gun style side plate, trigger guard with floral engraving on the bow and acorn finial. Two brass ramrod pipes, horn tipped wooden rammer with worm. Circa 1780. In darkly patinated sleepy condition, a very high, but austere quality blunderbuss. Stock with splits at muzzle.

Atypical of John Mantons work , may be one of the earliest Manton guns to survive, in style and detail very like a Twigg .The lock , Side plate and mounts are the same as these used by Twigg . The signature style is the same as Twigg’s third signature bar the name Manton.
